Project Overview
DuoChat is a concept feature designed for Duolingo that enables users to practice real conversations through chat-based interactions. Users can choose to communicate with either an AI partner or another learner in their target language, with adjustable difficulty levels to match their proficiency. The goal is to create a more natural, low-pressure environment for building fluency through conversation.
The Problem
Language learners often struggle to transition from structured lessons to real conversations, leaving them underprepared and lacking confidence in speaking and responding naturally.
The Solution
DuoChat introduces a chat-based practice space with AI and peer conversations, conversation prompts, and real-time translations. This helps users build confidence, improve fluency, and practice communication in a low-pressure environment tailored to their level.
What I did
Designed the UX feature concept, user flow, and interface structure for DuoChat within Duolingo. Through 5+ rounds of critique and feedback, I refined the experience to better support intuitive, low-pressure language learning through conversation.
